                                   Each experience worth remembering

                                             2012 IAEP Xue Rui

I don’t know when I will have the chance to step on the land of Africa if there were not the exchange program. In order to have a unique semester of 4-year college life, I made the decision without any hesitation. You may worry about the student duties, grades in your previous life, also uncertain and fear about unfamiliar things, while once you start this new life, you will find that the surprise of life will make itself more interesting.

South Africa early in my mind was merely two symbols: Nelson Mandela and vuvuzela, one stands for the struggle and fight against racial discrimination, the other one is the symbol of 2010 FIFA World Cup.The university of Pretoria, the university we cooperated with, was also new to me. The information I originally get were mostly from search engines, however, through the 4-month life, I can gradually feel and touch the warmth of the country, the university, which can’t be googled.

Part 1

Most international students live in tuksdorp, where safety system is well-organized. Every student has his own bedroom, we three Chinese girls, one American girl, together with a Denmark girl share a big house. Facilities and appliances are adequate for daily life and enough space for small parties. Wifi can be used for free in the dorm, which is very convenient. Near the dorm, there is a big supermarket, various restaurants, post office, clothing stores, cinema, etc, all these basically meet the need of everyday life. One thing to note that the pubic transportation system is less convenient than China, buses and taxis are not safe enough, it’s better to choose other ways.

Part 2

According to Mrs.Plant’s opinion, I chose three courses totally, two on internal auditing, one on business management. There are fewer classes, but over ten tests altogether, which is very different from Chinese universities. This brought me many challenges, also let me know the effect of accumulating knowledge constantly. Internal auditing is a course systematically organized, combine the actual facts of South Africa and the international standards, when teaching fraud auditing, some experts working in accounting firms will come to class and share the practical experience with students, which will help me a lot.

People say, environment is one important factor of language studying. It’s really pleasant to see the improvement of English speaking. During these days, I didn’t learn English on purpose, but the changes happened, I had to contribute this to the impact of environment.

Part 3

It’s no doubt that we should take advantage of the opportunity to travel around the South Africa.

The first place you can’t miss is Cape Town, a beautiful seaside city. Table mountain, seals island, cape of good hope, wine, seafood and the blue sky you can find everywhere, which will attract you to come to this place once more.

Lesedi culture village, where you can observe the traditional African tribe culture, music, dancing and food here will impress you.

Also, you can have a picture with Mandala at union building square, you can see wild animals in Kruger National Park, you can surf in sun city...

The university is also a lovely place, you can read books sitting on grassland, you can go for the chorus show, you can play football, tennis, basketball, etc at sports campus, you can also do nothing and see Jacaranda falling down.

When I came back, many people asked me about the life abroad. No matter how much I said, I always felt I missed something, just like what I wrote above, they were not enough compared with what I felt. Maybe this is life, something you call it experience, must be experienced in person and felt by heart.
